To implement an effect, choose the Selection Tool, represented by the “I”-shaped icon to the right of the “Record” button. Use Audacity's effects to clean up or improve vocal quality. Delete test tracks by pressing "Stop" and then clicking the small "X" in the upper left-hand corner of the Meter Toolbar. Adjust the Input Volume slider, indicated by the microphone icon on the right-hand side of the screen, and your microphone's input settings - typically a switch with “high,” “medium” and “low” settings - until you find the right levels. The peaks of the waveform should reach around 6.0 dB on the high end and -6.0 dB on the low end. Watch the waveform on the Meter Toolbar, the bar in the center of the interface that represents your track.

Press the green “Play” button to listen to your test and adjust your levels accordingly, helping you to avoid tinny or peaking vocals, as well as vocals that are too loud or too quiet. Click the yellow “Stop” button to end your test. Speak into the microphone, leaving about a foot of space between the mic and your mouth. With your mic plugged in and turned on, press the red “Record” button located on Audacity's main control panel.
